  1. In 1965 the university of Leeds was awarded a grant from the wellcome trust to develop the old lifeboat station at Robin Hoods Bay into a marine laboratory. My father, Dr J.R.Lewis D.sc was appointed as director and the laboratory developed into a highly respected facility with an international reputation -both for teaching and research. The laboratory was eventually closed due to funding issues but not before it had produced an exceptional record of world class scientific publications
