June 2021 – 8 May 2022
Please note that the museum is closed from Sunday 5th December until Tuesday 8th February. The exhibition will resume on reopening and continue until 8th May.
Introducing our exciting new exhibition John Tindale: A Vision of Whitby.
The exhibition shows the photography of John Tindale from scenic landscapes to portraiture and news photography. It also documents his life and how his involvement in Whitby life strengthened over time as he became involved in preserving its culture and past as well as helping to build a vision for its future through artefacts, illustrations, photographic material, information and in a first for Whitby Museum touchscreen technology.
The exhibition also features a new mini-theatre where you can see the stunning 20-minute film, ‘Vision of Whitby’. Put together over the course of the last two years by renowned film maker, Anne Dodsworth @blowyourtrumpetfilms, the film highlights what is special about Whitby and the people who live in it. The film also documents the life and work of John including interview footage with local people who knew and worked with him.
As you will see from this short trailer the film is presented in a truly artistic style across three screens giving dramatic impact to new Whitby drone footage and unseen archival material. There are also special sections on projects John was involved with such as the North York Moors Railway and the return of the HMS Endeavour to Whitby all accompanied by the music of local country musician Paul Wheater as well as an original soundtrack. Complementing the main film are two shorter films; ‘You’ll Never Tame the Sea’ and ‘A Whitby Life’.
There have been many photographers in Whitby and there will be many more to come but here we present John Tindale’s own vision of Whitby as seen through his eyes and the lens of his camera.
We thank the John Tindale Foundation and the TWV Roe Trust and the Yorkshire and North East Film Archives without whom the exhibition would not have been possible.
Keep watching our website’s dedicated page John Tindale: A Vision of Whitby and social media posts over the next weeks and months as we highlight differing areas of the exhibition.
