Leave a legacy

Leaving a gift in your will is a very special, lasting way to enable the museum to continue and prosper for generations to come.

There is more than one way to leave a cash amount. You can leave –

A pecuniary gift – a specific amount of money decided by you or

A residuary gift – a percentage of your estate after other legacies, inheritance tax and expenses have been paid. As these types of gift are based on a percentage rather than a specified amount they tend to be inflation-proof and particularly beneficial.

Legacies to the Whitby Literary and Philosophical Society are not liable for inheritance tax as the Society (whose function is to run the museum for the benefit of Whitby and its people) is a registered charity (Charity No 1171266).

If you wish to consider us in this way, we would advise that you speak to your solicitor who can assist with the writing or amending of your will.

Please contact our museum manager manager@whitbymuseum.org.uk if you have any questions.

If you do decide to include a legacy in your will please accept our heartfelt thanks.
