We welcomed 11 Year 6 pupils from Castleton & Glaisdale Primary School on Thursday 17th October as they joined us for our Library & Archive Workshop & Tour. They travelled with two teachers, Mr Wood and Mrs Wardell, to Whitby on the train practising for the journey some might be taking in September when they start Secondary School.
Following a brief introduction, I set them off on our Orienteering task which involves finding some interesting facts and familiarising themselves with the library.
After they had completed that task, we began the tour which involved splitting them into two groups and rotating round 3 activities; navigating the Digital Whitby Gazette with me – involving looking for family members and a ‘search & find’ task. Mr Wood found several sporting articles that he featured in!
Charles took them into the Tommy Roe Archive Room showing them a couple of Whitby Gazette papers with articles featuring both schools – Glaisdale School Report 22nd March 1992 and Castleton’s Centenary Celebrations 27th November 1974. They also saw a diary entry in the Michael Stainsby Archive about a tank incident that happened on 19th November 1942:
19th November 1942
This evening at 4.30pm an army tank skidded on the road which had a glassy surface and smashed down the double gates of the school demolishing the two pillars and about six feet of the boundary wall. Later three other tanks damaged the wall of the school and school house in three different places. Finally, volunteer Rob took them through the book cleaning procedure on the Down Draught Bench and talked about bug control.
