In cabinet 18, 19 and 20 we have numerous publications relating to North Yorkshire. These are available for the public to view on request.
Included in the collection are:
Annual Reports for the Whitby Literary & Philosophical Society
Kelly’s Directory of the North & East Ridings of Yorkshire – which according to the volunteers is like Yellow Pages. Each publication is separated into district/village/town/, with a brief biography and contact details for businesses and industry such as farms, schools etc. Even back in 1921 the attention to detail was all there with the ‘fore-edge indexing’!
North Yorkshire County Records Office – of which a volunteer has meticulously worked their way through the publications and located all the ones relating to Whitby…bravo! Here you will find reference numbers to locate the documents at the office in North Allerton.
Borthwick Institute Bulletins
Yorkshire Journal – just one of the many Yorkshire magazines and booklets we have. Again, a volunteer has graciously scanned through the copies we have and listed all the articles relating to Whitby and the surrounding villages. I have selected to show you Spring 1997 as it features an article about Alum Mining – From Curses To Crystals by Chris Watson Page 54 – this sits perfectly with me, at the moment, as my outreach sessions feature the Alum Works at Ravenscar.
In the archives, we hold collections of Egton & Grosmont Parish Magazines and The Link Parish Magazines
If you are interested in having a browse through our publications or need to access them for research purposes please drop us an email: library@whitbymuseum.org.uk or call in Tuesday to Friday 10am-4.00pm
