Genealogy is the study of family origins and history. The perfect place to start this discovery is here! We subscribe to Find My Past; start to create your family tree using online census records, parish records and newspapers etc. Looking at the 1939 census you can discover what family members did for a living, maps of where they lived and even who their neighbours were! You can also search a home address or other to find out who has lived there. A wealth of information at your finger tips. We have volunteers that will take you through the process. Also, look out for family history workshops coming up in the new year!
Also, we have cabinets full of records relating to marriages, births, maps, pre-prepared family trees, history of buildings in and around Whitby and books about family history.
To extend your search further we currently have a digitised touch screen Whitby Gazette dating from 1900 to 1999. Explore the papers and lose yourself in historical articles which might surprise you!
