Services and charges
Library Services
The Library is open to members of the public, as well as to members of the Whitby Literary and Philosophical Society, for research during Library opening hours when Library staff will be available to assist. Members of the Society are allowed to borrow books (excluding those designated as for reference only).
To ensure that items from the collection will be available it is advisable to contact us before visiting. Making an appointment will help us to have material ready for you. Library staff will carry out 30 minutes of research free of charge if required, and this should be arranged in advance. Please note that any further research will be liable to a charge that must be paid before any more work is carried out.
We are able to photocopy, photograph and digitally scan documents that are held in the Library and Archive collection. Any copying will be carried out in accordance with Copyright law, and is subject to the completion of a Copyright declaration form. Fragile items are unsuitable for copying, but it may be possible to take a photo instead.

Photocopying
(to be carried out by Library Staff)
Black and white :
- A4 £0.40 per side
- A3 £0.80 per side
Colour :
- A4 £0.80 per side
- A3 £1.60 per side
Oversize items (i.e. larger than A3) difficult to photocopy in sections (e.g. maps, wills, deeds, etc.):
- £10.00 per hour pro rata
Scanning
We charge a minimum fee for scans sent by email: £5.00 for up to 10 images plus relevant research charge as below. We will require the fee in advance with a signed copyright form.
- In house scanning £0.50
Photography
- £5.00 per day unlimited use, or £0.40 per single photograph
Research fee
- The first half hour of research is free of charge.
- After the first half hour, time is charged in half-hourly intervals at £5.00 per half hour
The research fee covers the time spent on the search and not the results. We cannot guarantee that the information requested will be found.
Postage and Packing
For the UK we can use 1st or 2nd class postage and charge at cost plus packing.
Overseas postage is estimated individually.
All charges must be pre-paid for postal/email/telephone research requests.

Image Reproduction Charges
Persons or institutions wishing to reproduce images belonging to the Whitby Literary and Philosophical Society are invited to download our Application and Licence for Print Publication which contains all the necessary information.
