Whitby Gazette
The Library houses a large collection of Whitby Gazettes dating from the first issue in 1854 to the present day. Access to some early years print copies is limited due to the fragile quality of the paper.
In 2020 those copies of the Gazette held in our archives from 1900 to 2000 were digitised and made text searchable. In 2025, further digitised editions were added and now cover the period from 1854 up to 2014. A touch screen facility is available in the Library to enable browsing of these editions. We are grateful to the John Tindale Foundation for initiating and supporting this exciting project.
Appointments of one hour to browse the touch screen facility are available via the Library email library@whitbymuseum.org.uk or by enquiry at the museum desk, subject to availability. Access to the touchscreen may be possible without appointment if there are no other bookings at the time of your visit, please ask staff or volunteers in the library.
Please contact the Library if you would like to enquire about any edition outside of those available on the touch screen facility. Appointments to view may be available by prior arrangement depending on the condition of the material held.
