Eileen, a volunteer, took me into the archive room and showed me Henry Simpsons illustrated Apprentice Book – I was blown away by its intrinsic and articulated beauty! The detail in the illustrations and the uniformed writing style is exquisite. His passion for geometry is admirable, through to his meticulous calculations; clearly a bright fellow!
Who is Henry Simpson? He was born on the 29th September 1694 to Henry and Ann Simpson and was educated at a ‘Friends of Society School’ run by Francis Salkeld, where he thrived under his teachings. Like many from Whitby, Henry chose to pursue a career at sea. He married twice having lost his first wife, Esther, after eleven years of marriage. Unfortunately, he died at 47 years old on the 9th of October 1741 and is buried in the Friends Buriel ground in Whitby.
We took ownership of the book which was in a very poor state and had to be restored, which in itself was an enormous task. There is a detailed conservation report with the book which is worth a read. Henry Simpsons Illustrated Apprentice Book dated 1715 is available for general viewing, on appointment only, and is truly a treat for fans of intricate illustrations, beautiful calligraphy and duteous geometry calculations.
If you would like to book an appointment to look at the book, please contact library@whitbymuseum.org.uk. We are open Tuesday to Friday 10am to 4pm.
